Rana Nelson

From Asia with love

A Lao basket weaver who works with Saoban begins creating a unique basket bag from the peeled skin of wild bamboo, sustainably gathered and handwoven.
Ellen Agger and Alleson Kase, two Nova Scotians, never dreamed they’d spend four months every year travelling Southeast Asia from one textile co-op to the next, searching for organic silks and organic cotton textiles to sell back home. But they have been doing so since 2005 when they began what was to become TAMMACHAT Natural Textiles, a social enterprise offering luxurious handwoven silk scarves, fabrics, wall …

It’s official: Ethical fashion is ‘in’

How one ethical clothing company, Ascension, is changing the face of eco-fashion, one stylish piece after another
London, England - home of Buckingham Palace and High Street – is now home to its first ethical-fashion store, Ascension Clothing. Launched just this November, the Ascension store is leading the pack in ecological, socially responsible, and fashionable fashion, proving that gone are the days of rough, hemp potato-sack dresses. Paper People Clothing has expanded tremendously over the past year, jumping from being sold in three retail locations to 20. Jenn Fukushima and her Paper People Clothing is one of many eco-fashion designers leading the Canadian eco-fashion industry.
Jenn Fukushima’s fashion journey began back in 2002 when she was only in grade 11. A rock n’ roll tea party

Victoire's famed dresses hang from the ceiling, swaying to and fro.
Malorie Bertrand
I came upon Victoire with its 1950’s, butter-yellow wallpaper and doily-adorned hope chests while walking down Dalhousie Street in Ottawa’s trendy Byward Market. Victoire’s open and inviting layout, flowery yet edgy displays, and eclectic mix of vintage and new drew me into its doors and I began to peruse the enticing clothing racks.
This boutique is the most well-decorated store I think I have ever visited. There’s just something about how its young owners and high-school pals, Régine Paquette and …

I sew. When I tell people I make my own clothing, many are impressed. I don’t really understand why. Sewing for me is not about fashion. It’s about not dishing out $100 for a dress I can make for $10. It’s about trying to look different than what mall stores deem to be trendy. It is about the creation of a garment, one that fits my body perfectly at different times in my life. It’s about the art of pinning and draping fabric perfectly, screwing up, and starting all over …
