Haiti: Where do we begin?

I got a bit caught up today on what’s happening over in Haiti right now. Goodness, what a mess it is over there. I feel so helpless and overwhelmed. As one single person, what on Earth can I do to help? I know there’s something I can do, but what? I’ll ponder this thought until I come up with something tangible. But instead of getting down and out over my helplessness (I really should be less self-centered) I continued to educate myself on the issues related to this country’s current crisis and …

I (Malorie) just got back from my first trip to Europe. I flew to London with my sister where we met my dad and began our 12-day tour of the old country. I absolutely fell in love with London and am seriously considering moving there in a few years to teach or better yet, find a job related to EFmgzn.com in some way. The Brits’ humour is infectious and while strolling through London, I couldn’t help but feel like I was a part of something big. That’s probably because of …

The professional sports industry is a multi-billion dollar a year business. When you combine merchandise and ticket sales with television and advertising revenue, live sports becomes very extravagant. The shows put on by professional sports teams are held in arenas that hold tens of thousands of spectators, and often use indoor fireworks during player introductions.
The National Basketball Association’s famed Toronto-based team, the Toronto Raptors, lack serious effort to be environmentally-friendly. Glaring problems are exhibited during games at the Raptors’ home venue, the Air Canada Centre. The amounts of waste …

Can you be environmentally friendly and still buy clothes?
This is a question that all those involved in or concerned with eco-fashion must grapple with every day. Eco-entrepreneur and co-creator of www.ecofashionworld.com, Kim Poldner, organized a workshop regarding this question during last week’s World Congress on Organic Cotton held at the Casino Kursaal in Interlaken, Switzerland. Seeing as how it’s such a hot topic in the fashion industry these days, I’m sure eco-fashion designers are asked this question in every interview they give and it’s a question that I’ll try to answer in …

How To Amass A Working Wardrobe
I’ve been a working woman for over a year now and I’m not ashamed to say that a big part of my excitement in starting my first professional job was over how awefully fun it was going to be to shop for work-appropriate clothes. Not only would I be delving into a whole new avenue of fashion, (full of pin-stripped, wide-legged pants, patent leather pumps with cute silver buckles, and feminine blouses of all colours) but I’d have the best excuse EVER to do so: “Helloooo, …

From City Chic To Trailer Park Chick

Although the first day of fall hasn’t officially arrived, I’m sad to admit (and give in) to the fact that it is pretty much here.  Some eager trees have already started to change colour, and on a recent boat ride I couldn’t help but notice the vacant bird nests – a sure fire sign that spring has sprung, summer bloomed, and fall is here.  Not like we had a heat soaked summer or anything and we’re saying adieu to hot summer days, but fall means we’re just that much closer …

Great news everybody!  Six Foot Bay is now officially solar powered!

Yes yes, this is great news for all eco-lovers out there.  Two weeks ago I watched from the store as the workers assembled the solar panels and set it all up on top of the stone building attached to the pro shop.
This means the pool and the restaurant will be powered with solar energy!   Um, like, woah anybody?
Major eco-props to Six Foot on this one!

This has really got me thinking about how change is effected differently depending on whether or …

The Working Girl

I just adore fashion. I read every major magazine, visit every major website and blog daily, and shop like its my job. Unfortunately for me, it’s NOT my job. I work to pay the bills – like so many other recent graduates, I am not one of the lucky few able to combine my passions and garner a paycheck from it. For the time being, I’ve settled for writing about fashion.
If there is one thing I have come to recognize from my stale, mono-chromatic working environment, is the severe and …

From City Chic to Trailer Park Chick

I’d like to place a call to mother nature on her direct line and file a complaint.  Or more like a question – where the EF is summer!?  One week a month of hot, sunny, cantstandtheheat weather just does not cut it for me!  I am just baffled at the amount of rain we have seen since May and I’m convinced there cannot possibly be any more moisture in those clouds.  So having officially said goodbye to July, I am crossing my fingers that the clouds are all dried up …

I’ve mentioned before I work at ‘Halls Mill’– more specifically I man the ‘sugar shack’, which is the resident tuck shop here at Six Foot Bay.  For those of you who never did the whole ‘camp thing’ the tuck shop is candy heaven for all little children, and ours also features a wide variety of Kawartha Dairy ice cream.  Therefore as I’m sure you could guess the general demographic of who I serve on a daily basis is children ranging mostly from the ages of 3-12.  I serve mostly candy, …
